Swiss Lotto just made its 750th millionaire!

At long last, 14,518 days after the start of Swiss Lotto on 10 January 1970, everything was in place. In the Saturday draw 26 January 2019, one lucky winner with the numbers 11, 12, 29, 33, 38 and 41 became the 750th Lotto millionaire. Making it a perfect time to take a look back at the various milestones in Swiss Lotto’s history.

First-ever Lotto millionaire thanks to the jackpot system

It took more than nine years for the first Swiss Lotto millionaire to be created. And it was the introduction of the jackpot to the classic Swiss Lotto system on 7 April 1979 that made this possible. Before this date, the entire winnings were paid out with each draw. But the jackpot system was soon fulfilling its purpose and the first lucky player scooped more than a million in the Swiss Lotto draw on 28 April 1979.

2007 – the year of the millionaires

An incredible 31 Lotto millionaires were created in 2007, more than in any other year on record. And the luckiest day in 2007 was a Wednesday, with 26 of the 31 winners being drawn on that day of the week. 2015 and 2016 were also good years for making millionaires: each of these years produced 30 freshly minted millionaires.

Four Lotto millionaires in one fell swoop

Generally speaking, one person wins the million. In two draws, however, four new Lotto millionaires were created at the same time. Four lucky winners pocketed winnings of 1,028,212.90 Swiss francs each on 11 April 2009. The second time that four players won simultaneously was 1 October 2011, when each winner won 1,119,284.55 francs.
